We’re looking for volunteers to join us in a range of roles. We’re currently recruiting for a new Chair, Trustees, a Marketing and Engagement volunteer, and Senior Planning volunteers.
We’re passionate about making the countryside in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough a better place for everyone to enjoy. Our vibrant team of volunteers inspires people to care for the countryside and enjoy the benefits it brings wherever they live.
Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to help us champion environmental issues such as planning and development, renewable energy, sustainable transport, and the climate emergency.
Our friendly team will provide you with training and support to develop in your role and you’ll gain valuable skills and experience in charity governance and leadership.

Chair - CPRE Cambrdgeshire and Peterborough
This is an excellent opportunity to play a senior leadership role in a respected environmental charity, bringing your planning, management and strategic thinking skills and experience to make a real difference and to be part of a friendly and passionate group.
About CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) Cambridgeshire and Peterborough
We strive to protect the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough countryside from unnecessary built-development by encouraging planning authorities to use previously-developed land before greenfield sites.
We scrutinise and comment on local, regional and district-wide planning documents. We examine individual planning applications which affect the countryside (e.g. large housing schemes – free standing new settlements or urban extensions, windfarms, solar farms and new road schemes).
England’s leading countryside charity comprises a National Office and 42 local CPREs, each operating as a separate charity. At a national level, CPRE campaigns for a beautiful and thriving countryside that is valued, enjoyed and accessible to everyone.
We are looking for a Chair to join us to help strengthen our board of trustees and to lead and develop our forward plan and vision.
What will you be doing?
The Executive Committee of CPRE Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is the governing body of the charity and is collectively responsible for the leadership and direction of the charity. The role of a Chair includes:
- Providing leadership to CPRE Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and its board of trustees in agreeing objectives for the Branch
- acting as line manager to Branch staff
- helping to secure the resources (financial and human) that the Branch will need to fulfill its charitable responsibilities
- developing and maintaining a forward plan
- maintain good communications between the Branch, national CPRE and other CPRE groups
- representing the Branch at public meetings and in meetings with local politicians and government officers
- giving media interviews
What are we looking for?
- Leadership and management skills
- Good communication skills
- Knowledge or experience of the planning system would be helpful
- Interest in/knowledge of environmental issues and a commitment to CPRE policies
- Good, independent judgement
- The ability to think strategically
You will be home-based, carrying out activities around your other commitments. We anticipate this voluntary role will take 8 hours per week, with attendance at six online meetings per year (evenings). In accordance with our constitution, our Trustees have the option to serve for up to 6 years.
